SUMMARY

As a senior officer of Houston Community College System (HCCS), the Executive Director Foundation will report directly to the HCC Foundation Board of Directors (Foundation Board) and work closely with the Chancellor and other senior executive leaders to implement fundraising initiatives, scholarship programs and manage the endowment fund. Provide quality, efficient and compliant development operations through the daily management of a team of staff members. In partnership with the Foundation Board, serve as a key team member and an active participant in establishing the infrastructure and overall planning, development, and management of the organization's relationships with individual donors and organizations, organizations as well as leaders and community influencers, including cultivation strategies, solicitation and stewardship of gifts. Lead current and future comprehensive fund raising campaigns. Actively grow the Foundation’s budget through a well-functioning alumni network, and cultivating in-kind and monetary support from foundations, community-based organizations, other non-profits, administrators, and professional leaders.

 

Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable law, regulation, policies and procedures.

 

Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, and performance evaluations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. In collaboration with the Foundation Board, support all aspects of development activities, cultivation of key relationships, and be responsible for overall planning, development, and management of HCCS’s and HCC Foundation’s relationships with individual donors and organizations;
  2. Utilize strategic vision to implement annual work plans focused on outcomes, which align with and support the Strategic Plan, including a communications plan to effectively and appropriately maintain top of mind awareness of the HCC Foundation among all  constituent groups, including Foundation Board, HCC staff, funders, potential funders and stakeholders in the community;
  3. Coordinate the Foundation activities with college presidents, key executives and divisions;
  4. Provide daily direction and management of the internal development team's operations, to maximize employee performance within their areas of responsibility, through project management, planning, organizing and implementing system processes;
  5. Support the annual budgeting process, and oversee budgets and timelines for projects and manage the department's workflow;
  6. Work collaboratively with all departments in the organization and serve as the primary point of contact with Financial Aid and Scholarships Departments
  7. Implement online metrics for all initiatives from conception; report on metrics to the Foundation Board and the Chancellor and adjust initiatives, based on data;
  8. Collaborate with HCCS finance staff to administer the Foundation’s assets and resources; ensure compliance with all policies, rules and regulations and reporting requirements;
  9. Oversee audits and annual independent audits of all funds; develop and administer the foundation’s budget ensuring compliance with applicable rules and regulations and with Foundation’s Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws;
  10. Plan, organize and coordinate quarterly board meetings and annual meetings, and capital campaigns as necessary; and plan and coordinate benefit events such as luncheons and galas;
  11. Monitor funds to ensure donor-directed gifts comply with donor directives; and
  12. Prepare proposals for grants to foundations, corporations, organizations and individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred; Certified Fund Raising Executive certification preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years progressively successful practical experience in philanthropy, with demonstrated success in fund development and cultivation, and planned giving is required.

Minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory level, experience working with a board of directors, managing volunteers, capital campaigns, donor recruitment, estate planning, and fund management.

 

Demonstrated track record of performance in fundraising with Houston foundations, other foundations, corporations, individual donors, and other projects.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Demonstrated experience in overseeing benefit and development events;
  2. Able to make well-reasoned decisions in the best interests of the organization for the present and future, and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with individuals  of diverse backgrounds;
  3. Outstanding team leadership skills;
  4. Proven ability to recruit, retain, motivate, develop talented individuals and engage them in the collaborative achievement of personal, departmental and organizational goals;
  5. Proven capacity to develop relationships with donors, agents of wealth, and various professional services related to asset development;
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  7. Strong leadership and public relations skills; and
  8. Familiarity with grants and proposals.
